Phil Sugden



Philip Sugden  is currently working on a series of 21 sepia ink drawings entitled, "Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God." He also has work at Central Booking, a gallery in Brooklyn, NY in a group show entitled, "Measure for Measure." in February.

Born in Swanage, Dorset, England, Phil moved to US at the age of 6. He has taken 12 journeys to Tibet, Nepal, India since 1978. He studied painting under Arnaud D'Hauterive (Grand Prix de Roma) in Paris. He has had exhibits at Galerie Atelier Three, Paris; Galerie Esplanade de la Defense, Paris; Salon des Artistes Francais, Grand Palais, Paris and more. In 1988 he took a six-month journey to India, Ladakh, Nepal, Tibet to create book and PBS presentation “White Lotus.” He was the guest of The Dalai Lama, for two weeks in Dharamsala. In 1989 he exhibited his work at The Nicholas Roerich Museum, NYC.

In 1991 he and his long time partner, Carole, hosted the Dalai Lama for 2 days at their home and studio in Findlay, Ohio. He was a guest currator for the 1991 International Year of Tibet at The Nicholas Roerich Museum, NYC. Exhibit at The October Gallery, London. In 1994 his work was shown at St. Boniface Gallery of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC where he met Arch-Bishop Desmond Tutu in the Cathedral’s gallery. His photographs were exhibited at The Smithsonian Institute in 2000.

He continues to exhibit in New York, Philadelphia and other galleries across the country. He was recentely named Art Department Chair at Bluffton University in Bluffton, OH.
